Throughout the year, we have discussed King’s statement, “It is an historical fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily.” Explain the significance, giving specific examples, of how King’s statement applies to United States history. Go beyond the Civil Rights issues we have discussed. King was talking about all human struggle.
2. How has government in America become more centralized since its beginnings? Identify specific events we studied this year that shaped this centralization of power in the federal government.
3. Explain an idea or theme that you have developed in your research papers during this year. Use specific examples from your papers and from our studies during this year. Do not re-write one of your research papers. You must explain a theme that runs through two or more of your research papers.
4. What values shape history? During the year, we have seen individuals and nations make choices based on principles and, sometimes, based on desires. Identify three values that have shaped the choices of individuals or nations we have encountered this year.

HOW TO SHARE A GOOGLE DOCUMENT WITH MR. HAGERTY INSIDE THE HISTORY FOLDER:
1. I have shared a FOLDER with you. The name of the folder is "History_Q1_2014."
2. If you cannot find that FOLDER or the sharing invitation in your Latin email, then let me know right away.
3. Open the FOLDER in your Google Drive.
4. Then, create a document. Your document will be filed automatically inside the FOLDER.
5. Name your google doc carefully. (You will see in the upper left hand corner that it is initially named “Untitled Document.”) For example, if a student has the name "Sally Dynamite," and she has written about the Puritans and freedom of religion, then she will name her google doc as follows:
Dynamite_Q1_Puritans and Freedom of Religion_v1
(The "v1" is important. I want you to learn about "versions." On a good paper, you will likely write 4 or 5 versions. With each version, your paper will improve. Your grade will improve. You will find that each version becomes easier to write.)
6. The document should automatically be shared with me (because you put it in a shared folder). The “share” button is in the upper right hand corner. Make sure that I have editing power. Make sure that your collaborator has editing power. (By the way, your collaborator DOES NOT have to be in the same history class. Your collaborator DOES NOT have to be writing on the same topic. Your collaborator should be someone who cares about you. This DOES NOT mean that the collaborator should be your best friend. In fact, effective collaboration is built on respect more than other factors. Experiment with this.)
7. Double check your sharing status. You will want to share your document with me and your collaborator, but you may not want to share it with anyone else.
Note: If you already have a document and you want to put it inside the FOLDER, then

Europeans Compete. They competed in two worlds. They were not only racing to find the gold in the New World, they were trying to defeat each other at the same time. Remember our Shia/Sunni exercise for Islam? Well Christianity can do it, too. It was split into Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. The New World became a battle ground for what was happening in the Old World (Europe).
